Route sections

Wellington Waterfront to Miramar Wharf

A wonderful 8½-kilometer trip from downtown Wellington to along the beautiful Tahitai walking & biking trail that takes you past various inner harbour bays to the Miramar wharf, close to the Wellington airport.

Wellington Waterfront to Ngauranga

This 7km section is the only part of the Great Harbour Way that moves away from the shoreline. Instead, it follows the separated footpath and bidirectional bike lane along Thorndon Quay, and the shared path along the old Hutt Road to Ngauranga where the wonderful Te Ara Tupua path starts.

Ngauranga to Petone

A lovely 9½km walk or bike along the world-class Te Ara Tupua path that opened in 2026 and the beautiful Petone foreshore. Definitely worthwhile to take a sidetrip to Petone’s Jackson Street with its fantastic selection of cafes and shops.

Seaview to Days Bay

This 8km section starts in Seaview, following the Hutt river mouth along the industrial area and cutting through the Seaview Marina before picking up the wonderful Tupua Horo Nuku shared path and carrying on to Days Bay.

Days Bay to Pencarrow

An initial short 5km section to Burdan Gate via Eastbourne, where the road finishes and a 7km gravel track that takes you to Pencarrow Lighthouse along a wonderful wild coastline where you can watch ships enter the Wellington Harbour from the Cook Strait. The 13km return journey makes this a total 25km trip.
